Hawa Mahal Jaipur – The Iconic Palace of Winds in Rajasthan

Hawa Mahal Jaipur – The Crown Jewel of the Pink City

Jaipur, popularly known as the Pink City of India, is home to magnificent forts, royal palaces, vibrant bazaars, and rich Rajasthani culture and Language. Among its most iconic landmarks, Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds) stands as a symbol of Jaipur's royal heritage and architectural brilliance. Every year, thousands of tourists from India and around the world visit Hawa Mahal to admire its unique architectural, historical significance, and stunning views of the city.

Whether you are planning a family vacation, honeymoon, solo trip, or Rajasthan tour, Hawa Mahal is a must-visit destination.

History of Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, inspired by the crown of Lord Krishna. The palace was designed by the famous architect Lal Chand Ustad using pink and red sandstone, perfectly matching Jaipur's signature color.

Unlike most royal palaces, Hawa Mahal was never intended to be a residence. It was designed exclusively for the women of the Rajput royal family, enabling them to enjoy processions, and everyday life on the streets without being seen, Jaipur's lively streets, colourful bazaars, and magnificent festivals like Teej, Gangaur, and Dussehra while remaining hidden from public view under the traditional Purdah system.

Stunning Architecture

The five-storey Hawa Mahal is one of the finest examples of Rajput architecture. Its most famous feature is the 953 intricately carved windows (Jharokhas) that allow cool air to circulate naturally throughout the building.

These windows not only keep the palace cool during Rajasthan's hot summers and made by window door with high-quality teak wood but also create beautiful lighting patterns inside. Because of this natural ventilation system, the palace earned the name "Palace of Winds."

Did You Know?

The beautiful pink and red sandstone used in the construction of Hawa Mahal is widely believed to have been sourced from the quarries of Karauli district in Rajasthan. Renowned for its durability, fine texture, and distinctive color, Karauli sandstone has been used in several historic monuments across the state, contributing to Hawa Mahal's iconic pink appearance. In recent years, the same type of sandstone has also been used in the construction of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, highlighting its enduring significance in India's architectural heritage.
